UCLA forward Lauren Cheney has been named the LA Soccer News Women’s College Player of the Year. She also is among the finalists for the Soccer News Network National player of the Year, which will be announced next week.
Cheney, a senior forward from Indianapolis, Ind., became the first player in UCLA history to earn NSCAA All-America honors all four years of her college career. She finished the 2009 season ranked second on the team in scoring with 46 points (18 goals, 10 assists), while leading the Bruins to the school's seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA College Cup.
She rewrote the UCLA career record book during her senior season, ending her career ranked first in points (173) and game-winning goals (28). Cheney had a goal and two assists in three games with the U.S. Women's National Team last summer.
Cheney is one of three finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy which will be announced on Friday in St. Louis.
