Ian Harkes named MAC Hermann Trophy winner

ST. LOUIS -- Wake Forest midfielder Ian Harkes became the first son of a MAC Hermann Trophy winner to capture the award, it was announced during a ceremony during the Missouri Athletic Club banquet Friday night.

Harkes’ father, John, won the award playing for Virginia in 1987 and went on to captain the U.S. national team and play for Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United, D.C. United, the New England Revolution and Columbus Crew, and now coach FC Cincinnati.

West Virginia defender Kadeisha Buchanan was named winner of the women’s award.

Ian Harkes captained the Demon Deacons to a berth in the NCAA College Cup final and was named ACC Midfielder of the Year, ACC Tournament MVP and NCAA Tournament Offensive Most Outstanding Player.

Buchanan, a member of the Canadian national team, was a MAC Hermann Trophy finalist last year. Buchanan captained West Virginia to the NCAA College Cup final and was named the NCAA Tournament Defensive Most Outstanding Player. Buchanan, a four-time NSCAA All-American and four-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, was named Best Young Player at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and played for Canada’s bronze medal team in the 2016 Olympics.

The winners were selected in a vote conducted by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
